Helpful Information About Renter's Insurance

Do I Need Renter's Insurance?

We require that you insure your belongings that you store with us. This is for your protection. If something were to happen to cause damage to your belongings, such as a falling limb damaging the roof and causing a leak, we are not liable. Our business insurance is not allowed to cover the contents of any storage unit. In order to make it easy for our tenants, we work with a company that allows us to provide an insurance policy for you when you rent. Premiums are as low as $9 per month for $2,000 worth of coverage. Unlike most insurance policies, the policy has no deductible. In lieu of purchasing our policy, you may provide proof of insurance from your provider if you have it. Keep in mind that your homeowners deductible may be higher than the value of your stored goods. (This has been an issue for a previous tenant.)

How Do I Sign Up For Insurance?

When you rent your storage unit, our storage professionals will let you know that you are required to have insurance on your belongings. We will let you choose the coverage you think is needed to cover your belongings worth. If you currently rent a storage unit with us and do not have insurance or were not offered it when you rented, please contact us today. We will be glad to talk you through selecting a policy that is best for you.

How Do I Make a Claim?

The easiest way to file a claim is to do it online at this website: You can also call the toll-free claims number at 1-855-805-7433. All claims are based on the cash value of the property.

What is Covered With Renter's Insurance?

The insurance covers you in case of loss or damage to your stored goods from fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, weight of ice, snow or sleet, collapse of building, smoke or water damage (except for flood), vandalism, malicious mischief, or burglary. There must be visible signs of forced entry and a police report must be filed for a claim to be covered for theft. The insurance also covers your goods while in transit to and from the storage facility as a result from fire, collision, or vehicle overturn.

What Items Are Not Covered by the Policy?

To see what is not covered, go to the Storsmart website. There are various items that are not covered, most of which would be hard to determine a cash value.
